Just fixed the typo in Roman’s phone number, you should be able to pester him now
Thanks Johannes, sorted out now
I’m going to have to sit out of all climbing fun following Mondays knee drama
I wasn’t going to bring any gear, but I have a sport rope and sport draws if anyone wants me to bring them let me know!
Laura, does this mean you and JT are not coming? If so can no other people drop out please, we are cutting it a bit fine for quorum on the Sunday morning.
Matt: Llanddulas Cave is good for a convenient and usually dry sport hit. UKC Logbook - Llanddulas Cave
Jess and I will probably drive to the Llangollen area tomorrow night then try the trad at World’s End, before completing the drive later on Saturday. Possibly aim for Moelwyns on Sunday, depending on hangovers.
JT has covid
Ah i see. Get well soon JT! And hopefully you don’t get it too. It really sucks.
Know of a few people who have had, or got Covid recently. The common factor with all is contact with school kids.
Well JT can’t really avoid that…
Good to see some annual dinner traditions remain strong.
I thought it was great that the first epic of @LIon 's presidency happened on the first day. We got down to the car by torch light and thought we saw their lights descending too only to find out later they must have still been climbing for quite some time. Great trip. Thanks @PaulSagar and all the rest of the committee, old, new or both.
Yeah, I’m gonna get defensive and say “Adventure” rather than “Epic”
We were back at the car by 9pm so it’s just a long day, right?!
That said, it wasn’t without interest…Read on for more, or don’t.
I took that picture of Duc on Knight’s Move at about 1713 with still a pitch to go. Think Duc topped out about 1800 then brought me up and i scrambled over towards the east shoulder of North Buttress, by which time we couldn’t see or hear anything. Except we’d spotted a nearby occasionally flashing light to the south, followed by darkness…so we went to investigate and were now nowhere near the scramble exit which goes North of North Buttress.
Turns out is was some lost youngsters who’s head torches had ran out and they’d been signalling us by iPhone torch! They’d already called MRT and were hunkered down against Central Buttress at the top of North Gully, sheltered from the wind, had food and water, and it wasn’t that cold as you know. I’m not ashamed to admit I’m glad they’d called MRT already and we didn’t have to escort them down (which I almost certainly would have done otherwise).
Just as well because we descended the West Face (dumb idea with hindsight as it was a new way down to both of us). Should have Adam and Eve’d it and off the south east way down Cwm Tryfan. Instead we spent most of the next 2 hours sliding on our arses back to the north ridge car park.
The difference between an epic and and an adventure is the absence of pictures. If it’s an epic, stress levels preclude stopping for photography.
Love it. Proper adventure and totally in the club tradition. Well done on getting sorted.
This is one for the next newsletter! Type it up while fresh in the memory <3
I think plenty of epics have photos from before the true epic begins. I note there are none from the most dangerous part of the trip where my information tells me they had to make a brief informal bivvy. Which is to say, during the drive home
We came off along the east terrace and down the bottom of the north ridge, which is probably the most boring and annoying but easiest* way out from there and the way it might have been worth walking them down if you were familiar with that. Met a couple below the main around 4:30PM who agreed with us it would be good to be down for sunset and then set off up the North ridge. At least they said they had torches but I’m sure the MRT were nightmare busy for most of that night. Good we all got down without needing them.
* for a definition of easiest that’s mostly about navigation and less about effort.
@ducle clearly not satisfied with only almost needing headtorches when we did Grooved Arete, had to go back in the dark
Well… I thought we could do it faster without having to wait in a queue (and knowing the way already ;). Guess we were just faffing too much. We didn’t quite need to bivvy on the way back… a coffee at Telford services, and a brisk 10min sorting out gear in the car park there was enough to perk me up again to make it to Bicester.
The MRT logs only said they rescued the two people we found at the top of G.A. no mention of the couple you spotted Mike so I guess they got up and down ok. The logs mentioned that the helicopter we saw actually tried to winch the pair which I would have thought was a complete non-starter given where they were, but apparently they thought it was worth a try.
