Scotland/Skye Meet 24th May- 2nd June

All mountain areas of Britain from Friday 24th May 2019

A slack pressure pattern continues, with low pressure centred toward the northeast. Rather cool across northern Scotland for the rest of this week. Many places largely dry with just local brief showers or patches of drizzly rain. Mixed conditions prevail into the Bank Holiday weekend and beyond, with fairly low pressure in charge, but weather systems still moving around slowly. Expect rain from time to time, plus some heavy showers, in places giving rain for several hours. Cloud often shrouding higher terrain during or after rain. Temperatures around average for late May

:frowning:

It was fucking disgusting in Inverness until about an hour ago. We are going to head for the sea cliffs and hope for the best.

fingers crossed for you and Guy.

So it looks like we may have just missed the settled good weather :frowning:
Forecast looks a bit dreich, and cold, but same over all UK mountain areas. Wonder what Pembroke forecast is like? Oh :frowning:

Good news is that I will hopefully pick up Sadie Mk2 tomorrow evening.

I’ve just been talking about it with Peter - whatever forecast you check, north parts look quite damp, there is even a possibility for some wintery things in Caingorm (down to -3) or even on Skye (https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Sgurr-nan-Gillean/forecasts/964)

The more south, the better - Cornwall looks good, while not exactly supported by tides times (around 12 on Sun, but neap-ish tide),

For myself I can postpone Skye trip for 2-3 weeks and just do a shorter trip wherever it looks like being able to enjoy rock in more vertical way…

I’m out guys - absolutely gutted to miss it! I’d only be able to get there for Weds/Thurs and it’s just too far to justify it for a couple of days.

Hope you catch the weather and have the best time!

Sorry to hear that Katy, but understand. Next time!

Hi Adam, agree is looking not great for climbing and Skye does get all the clag. Definitely time to take a (rain)check on it. Forecast is better south than north: it is not terrible, but it is not great for making the most of Scotland and Skye :frowning: Very frustrating as has been glorious in Gloucestershire today.

So we have a Bank Holiday weekend, and a second weekend. Options are go to Scotland and make best of it, or go elsewhere for whole period, or just do two weekends in usual NLMC style wherever is best and save the leave for another time.

Get a flight abroad?
Cornwall?Dartmoor?

I’m still tempted to go up, even solo, but as I’m self employed I have flexibility to go when I want to some extent. The only thing I would say is that the midges will only get worse from now on.
Thoughts?

Looking at the current forecast, it does look like two weekend trips, best in Cornwall, so that’s my current vote.

Hiya, I am still happy to join for a trip elsewhere from Sat-Weds (Cornwall sounds good) if there is still the option of joining but also happy to skip this one too depending on how things pan out. Thanks!

That’s good news @Tui; at the moment though the weather forecast is looking dry for Saturday & Sunday only, so I am thinking of returning Sun night, or Monday morning unless the forecast changes. I think that we will need to book a camp site before we go, but they are available.

As I seem to be on the thread for this trip. Please take care use mosiguard or other repellent, cover up and check for ticks everyday and use specific tick removal tool if u get one. There are loads in Scotland and it is the little tick I got in the Dolomites that’s left me with chronic fatigue And Lyme Disease. So take care and enjoy the climbing. See Lyme diseaseuk for more info. Dan

Next year…
I’d rather go north than west, so assuming I have wheels I may head Cottage/Lakes and see how it goes from there. Whilst it is not set fair, the weather doesn’t look that bad especially for lower grade routes, ridges and scrambles, as well as just being in the Highlands.

We’ve migrated to the south east Cairngorms. Weather ok here but the west coast is a write off. Reiff was hellish this morning.

@Peter I’ll join for the Cornwall trip if that’s okay. Please book a space for me. Thanks Scotland people, but I don’t think the weather will improve before we have to leave so going South is the only way. Hope things improve for next weekend.

That’s great Mike; I am collecting Tui from Oakwood tube at 6pm tonight, then probably collecting Adam from Swindon; what works for you? I am on 07398718422.

cheers Paul. Everyone else has bailed to Cornwall or work, and Sadie Mk1 dying has screwed up the last few days so behind with work, so I’m going to leave it a couple of days so I can do a bit of a bed build and fit out on Sadie Mk2, and forecast permitting will head north next week.

Six years ago today the forecast was even worse, but Harri, Naomi, George and I still went north and had an epic trip, culminating in a Cuillin traverse under glorious blue skies…
