NLMC Alps Meet 2024 - Saastal

Cheers Matt. A guide sounds like a good idea. Hopefully I can rely on judgement and luck. And a guide.

Is anybody else interested in booking some time with a guide - to share ideas and costs and develop limited trad abilities into mountain skills?

Thanks Lottie - any pointers welcome.

Here is a link to the spreadsheet:

Hopefully it works, has all the necessary info, and access permissions. Let me know if there are any issues.

@bobf - I can recommend Miles Bright. He led the Gran Paradiso trip we did last year and was an excellent guide and instructor: https://www.alpineguide.co.uk/

If you want to be independent in the Alps then I would say getting instruction in glacier travel and crevasse rescue is essential.

Fantastic thanks Ian!

Not that Iā€™m biased as he is my mateā€™s husband, Kevin Avery is a brilliant guide, IFMGA, based in the Chamonix area.

Heā€™s also on Instagram as @truenorthalpine.

Iā€™m interested in getting involved in hiring a guide. I did a winter skills course in Snowdonia but it wasnā€™t super wintery so I donā€™t feel that would have left me well prepared to tackle anything in the alps. Have added my name to the spreadsheet.

Iā€™m definitely keen for this, and the dates work for me; Iā€™ve done a Conville course and a couple of alpine trips before, but all based in Chamonix so I donā€™t know much about the climbing in Saas.

thereā€™s now a British guide based in Interlaken, Dan Moore - I think he qualified in last yearā€™s BMG cohort

I have decent trad skills, but happy to make a move to alpine
But, I have some peculiar requirements. Happy to discuss, look into options.

Iā€™ve created a WhatsApp group for the Alps Trip. Please PM with your number if youā€™d like to be added.

Hi all.
Posting here as maybe not everybody has moved over to the WhatsApp chat.

Thanks for the guide suggestions. I havenā€™t had time to contact any of them yet, but will do soon.
It looks thereā€™s a small number of us who might be interested in doing a few days together with a guide (@josh1 - and maybe @Greg?). Iā€™m thinking maybe a few days tagged onto the start of the Saastal trip?
If I find out any more, happy to share with those whoā€™re interested.

HI @bobf ,
Iā€™d be interested in doing a few days together with a guide too; realistically itā€™s the only way I could feasibly come and not just do lower-down rock stuff the whole trip which, whilst not a dealbreaker I feel would be a little bit of a shame.

Hi @Alex,
completely agree - it would be a shame to go all that way without the skills to enjoy it properly.
I was thinking of maybe 12-14 June for some guiding. Work for you?
Iā€™ve been in touch with Dan Moore (a guide recommended by someone earlier). Heā€™s based in Switzerland and free at that time. Iā€™ll pass on the info from him in a DM.
Seems like @Alex and @josh1 are interested. Anybody else? Dan can take a party of up to 4.

Yep, Iā€™m very interested Iā€™m having some time with a guide too. Could you DM me the info as well, please?

Me
@bob I guess my last post was a bit too ambiguous.
Please, keep me in the loop. Yes, I am interested and keen to do this

Great. (You werenā€™t ambiguous - I just didnā€™t check messages properly).
Iā€™ll send you the info I have (as a DM, rather than cluttering up this space).

Dan (and, I think other guides too) can take parties of up to 4 - and 5 of us have expressed interest. If everyoneā€™s keen, then maybe we need to look at a second guide (and that gives flexibility if anybody else wants to join in).
