Further to some discussions over on the Social Whatsapp channel following an alarming post on social media involving a catastrophic fall in France, I have offered to run a Best Practice belay workshop at The Castle.
The following dates are offered:
Monday 3rd March 7pm
Saturday 8th March 2.30pm
Sunday 9th March 2.30pm
Tuesday 11th March 6.30/7pm
Please either go to the Social chat on the group Whatsapp and vote, or comment below with your preferred date.
Why is this important?
To keep our members safe. Knowing how to use your chosen (or your partner’s) belay device correctly is critical. You might think you know; having a workshop for demonstrations and discussion is a good place to disprove or question common errors.
Eg best belay device for lead beginners?
Best belay device for seasoned old-timers
Best position to stand when belaying?
How to manage weight differences
and anything else that you want to discuss.
This is an opportunity to discuss, learn and strive for best practice. Open to every member regardless of age or perceived ability.
I realise that some people won’t know me or my quals. I’m a qualified RCDI (Rock Climbing Development Instructor) as well as Development Coach. I’ve also recently been approved to start training to direct Mountain Training courses (the people who train instructors, like CWI or RCI). I’ve been a member of NLMC for 8 (?) years, and was New Members Sec for about 5 of those. One of my absolute top-of-the-list practices now is good belaying. What does this actually mean? Come to the workshop to discuss!
@xavierlwr sorry for the late reply on this. You are more than welcome to join one of the session if you can!
It will be a good opportunity for you to meet some of the members too…
Just going to say this was super helpful, very interesting and highly relevant no matter your actual or perceived experience. Tuesday’s session should be even better!
