Keen to see where this leads to. As someone with zero alpine experience and relatively new to climbing, hopefully we’ll find somewhere which accommodates both more experienced climbers and newbies.
Came across this article, which might offer some tips.
I just checked in on this chat. Maybe a comment to @Ladislav s point - if you are looking for Alpine mixed ground, Val di Mello gives access to the south side of the big mountains only. It is great for big adventure multipitches, early summer needing crampons for the approach, but I am not aware of anything else there, so for that Val di Mello is not ideal. @L_Pio mentioned the terrifying slabs and bouldering, they are definitely the bonus of this place.
For snow, ice, mixed and big mountain based on the ideas aired here, I would go to Täsch (=Zermatt) or Chamonix.
Chamonix has gotten some fabulous new bolted multipitches on Barberine and Giétroz the wall next to it that can be accessed by train, so that is a bonus there!
Zermatt is not the place for a lot of rock climbing.
There was a sports crag at the start of the path leading to to Berggasthaus Trift > Rothornhütte, but I never saw any topos for that.
Also, this sounds interesting to get warmed up for the bigger mountains: Climbing the Riffelhorn | Zermatt, Switzerland
Just putting this out there. If it’s Chamonix, why July when it’s very busy and hot. Subject to potentially a few routes/passes not being open due to snow etc (unlikely with current conditions/trends), June is better for the weather and far less busy.
I’ve really enjoyed trips to Cham in June, not as busy and everything much more stable than later in summer. looked at the CMB website and the only lift not open until July is the Grands Montets (opens on 2/7)
I’ve decided to spend June first in Scotland, then in Cornwall for the CC meet before transferring over to the (doubtless superior) NLMC solstice meet. So I’m now a no for a June alps trip.
I may also just stay in the UK this year and aim to climb as much trad as possible, so even if a July trip happens I think I’m now a maybe. Gotta specialise to improve, and as fun as alpine climbing is, it’s not what my goals are this year!
Hi All - June is getting closer and I think if we are serious about and earlier Cham trip, we should start nailing down some dates. With that in mind, I’d like to propose June 2nd - 11th. Are there any takers?
There’s not much point going to Chamonix that early as most of the lifts don’t even open until June 10th and the Grands Montets lift doesn’t open until the start of July.
Hey, just wondered if there’s been any offline chat about what dates for the alps trip? Is the club likely to go with the tentative dates on in July or likely to be earlier?
Yes, after some early enthusiasm, it’s all gone a bit quiet on this thread. Maybe that means others have made different plans - or lost interest.
But if if there are people keen to go somewhere in the Alps, I’d be up for it - early or late June, or early July work for me.
Any interest?
Mulling over a return to Ailefroide with Rob Pirouet to do lots of multipitch rock, probably during the first two weeks of July. I wouldn’t say this is an official club trip but more company is always welcome.
It seems that a lot of people have already made their own plans for trips earlier in May/June which I can’t do unfortunately.
